Jose Mourinho has revealed in a new Netflix documentary that he signed a contract to become Manchester United manager in 2013, succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson .
Despite the agreement, Mourinho tearfully reneged on the deal, explaining to Ferguson that he had given his word to Chelsea and felt unable to break it.
Mourinho chose to return to Chelsea for a second spell, stating he made the decision 'with his heart' due to his strong affection for the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the phone call, expressing his disappointment at the time but understanding Mourinho's commitment to Chelsea.
Mourinho eventually managed Manchester United from 2016, but his 2013 decision meant he missed the immediate opportunity to take over from Ferguson, a period during which the club struggled to maintain its previous dominance.
