Jose Mourinho 'to meet with Man Utd friends' on Old Trafford return with Tottenham

Jose Mourinho plans to meet up with Manchester United friends when he returns to Old Trafford as Tottenham manager on Wednesday night.

After three wins from three since succeeding Mauricio Pochettino as Tottenham manager, Mourinho's next assignment takes him back to former club United for a midweek Premier League clash.

Mourinho is keen to maintain good relations with the club he managed from May 2016 to December 2018, when he was sacked and replaced by current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And he says he has received "50 messages from Manchester United people" since taking the Tottenham job.

Now the Spurs manager is hoping to catch up with United staff who he considers friends on Wednesday, according to the Daily Mail .

They include club chef Mike Donnelly, some members of the medical team, the kit men and ground staff.

Mourinho received a positive reception from United fans when he was at Old Trafford as a pundit for Sky Sports earlier this season.

He is said to be keen to avoid a repeat of his strained relationship with Chelsea fans, a section of whom taunted him when his United side travelled to Stamford Bridge in 2018.

Since replacing Pochettino last month, Mourinho has masterminded wins over West Ham and Bournemouth in the Premier League, and Olympiakos in the Champions League.

He has led Tottenham up to fifth place in the Premier League - albeit they are still six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, with the Portuguese hoping a win over United on Wednesday can help to close that gap.

United boss Solskjaer is in more desperate need of the points, with his side down in ninth place, eight points behind the top four.
