Jose Mourinho speaks about his 'next project' in football amid Newcastle United links

Jose Mourinho says he would need to be 'convinced by a project' if his next job in football is to be at club level.

The 56-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United in December - and has been linked to taking over at Newcastle United if the Bin Zayed Group completes a proposed buyout.

The Portuguese coach has a unique affection for Newcastle after spending many years learning from Sir Bobby Robson while at Sporting, Porto and finally Barcelona in the mid-90s.

Whilst he is used to battling for league titles, Mourinho is open to the 'right project' domestically but admits he'd need to be persuaded to take up an offer.

"Winning a fifth championship in a different country or the Champions League with a third club are things I’d like to do.

"I wouldn’t do it just for that. I only go where a project convinces me."

Mourinho has made no secret about his desire to eventually take a job managing a national side and added in his interview with Eleven Sports that he would like to try his hand at a World Cup.

"I want to compete in new competitions," he said.

"I think about the World Cup and the European Championships.

"For a long time I have had the desire to try out such an adventure. Right now, I see myself more at a national team than with a new club.

"Is Portugal the right team for me? Not necessarily."
