Jose Mourinho sends message to Tottenham fans following racist abuse in Chelsea defeat

Jose Mourinho has defended Tottenham fans following the unsavoury incident that overshadowed Sunday's home defeat to Chelsea.

Shortly after Son Heung-min had been shown a straight red card after kicking out at Antonio Rudiger, the Blues defender complained to Cesar Azpilicueta after hearing monkey noises from a section in the south eastern corner of stadium.

The Chelsea captain then told referee Anthony Taylor what had happened, with the match official then halting play as he relayed the information to fourth official Andre Marriner and three separate announcements were made in the stadium that "racist behaviour was interfering with the game."

Quizzed after the game about the incident when speaking to the press, Mourinho was once again asked when holding his pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon ahead of the Boxing Day game against Brighton.

Asked if punishments should be tougher, he said: "I am nobody to say that. I am somebody just to say that I am anti-racist in all my areas of living, either in society or in my job. More than that I cannot say.

"My message is that it is not fair to say Tottenham fans. One Tottenham fan is not Tottenham fans.

"Tottenham fans, at least since I am here - before I didn't follow with the same intensity - since I am here, they have been phenomenal.

"Home, away, phenomenal. Home, away, supporting the team, respecting the opponents. Incredible behaviour

"We went to Wolves. It looked like an invasion of Spurs fans in Molineux. Amazing. Outside, amazing.

"I leave matches, go in my car when we play at home. Go down the street, busy street, no problems at all. Great discipline. Great behaviour.

"So for me, if I have to say something it is to ask my supporters, the Tottenham supporters, to keep doing exactly the same that they are doing with the team, which is supporting the team in a season that has not been easy at all - since the beginning of the season it has been difficult.

"To ask them to be exactly the same and obviously to look to the guy to the left and look to the guy to the right, and listen to the guy behind me and listen to the guy in front of me. And if anyone has any little manifestation, to try in there in between them to kill it immediately. That's the only thing I can ask for."
