Jose Mourinho says Tottenham tactics 'controlled' Arsenal in north London derby win

Jose Mourinho says his Tottenham team "controlled" Arsenal as a tactical shift saw the hosts win the north London derby on Sunday.

Arsenal came into the game, their first at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with five wins and a draw from their previous six games, while Spurs were last time out blunted by relegation-threatened Bournemouth.

Alexandre Lacazette broke the deadlock with a thunderous finish, only for Heung-min Son to equalise within three minutes.

The second half was a more cagey affair, with Arsenal on top before Toby Alderweireld earned all three points with a header nine minutes from time.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: "I think the game was more tactical than anything.

"To be honest I think Mikel (Arteta) found a way for them to play, to be stable and to improve - they are improving and we felt that we should adapt slightly to them and I think we did it very well.

"Because how many times (Kieran) Tierney and (Hector) Bellerin normally reach the last third and how well they were controlled today. I think they were very controlled at that level."

Spurs leapfrog their rivals into eighth ahead of Wednesday's trip to face Newcastle. Arsenal host champions Liverpool later in the evening.
