Jose Mourinho says the one thing Tottenham fans didn't want to hear about Steven Bergwijn injury

Jose Mourinho has claimed that he doesn't expect Steven Bergwijn to play again this season.

The Dutch international limped off after the full-time whistle in the 1-1 draw at Burnley and it has since been confirmed that he has suffered a "significant sprain" to his left ankle.

"Following assessment and examination by our medical team, we can confirm that Steven Bergwijn suffered a significant sprain to his left ankle during our match against Burnley," read a statement on the club's website.

"The Netherlands international will now undergo an extended period of rehabilitation where his progress will continue to be assessed."

Already without Harry Kane and Son Heung-min through injury, the news regarding Bergwijn comes as a major blow ahead of their crunch Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

Now out in Germany ahead of the match after training at Hotspur Way on Monday morning, Mourinho opened up on the bad news regarding the January signing.

"Yes, I can believe it," he said at his pre-match press conference. "Ben [Davies], one week, two weeks. Steven, I don’t expect him to play again this season.”

"We’re used to it," he added. "I’d say we were psychologically more down with the other injuries because when you’ve got four or five injuries, what’s six or seven?"

Already facing an uphill task out in Leipzig prior to Bergwijn's injury, Mourinho is still confident that he has goals in the team despite missing his key attacking players.

"We are losing 1-0 at half-time," explained the experienced boss. "We were losing 1-0 at half-time two days ago. It’s something that’s happened to use a few times this season.

"You ask me how can you score two goals without Kane, Son, Bergwijn. There are many ways to score goals. A Leipzig player could even do what Antonio Rudiger did and score for us."
