David Cameron has reacted to the sacking of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho somewhat unsympathetically by pointing to the "740,000 vacancies" in the UK economy.
Mourinho was sacked during a board meeting on Wednesday after Chelsea lost nine Premier League matches this season. A candidate to replace him has reportedly already been lined up, rubbing salt into what must be a very painful wound.
Jubilant Chelsea fans are celebrating his shock departure on Twitter and football pundits are scrambling to determine who will replace him.
Even the Prime Minister has had a say on the matter, reportedly telling ITV: “The PM is always sad to see anyone lose their job but he would point to the 740k vacancies in UK economy.”
Mourinho’s terrible day follows a difficult year on and off the pitch. The 52-year-old has been embroiled in a highly publicised dispute with Chelsea’s team doctor, Eva Carneiro and in October was hit with a £40,000 fine after storming into a referee's dressing room during a football game against West Ham.
Guus Hiddink is being named as the favourite to replace Mourinho, until at least the end of this season.
