Jose Mourinho's Tottenham wildcard who could hold the key in RB Leipzig Champions League clash

It's three months ago since Ryan Sessegnon really announced himself to Tottenham fans.

Finally joining the club on transfer deadline day after much speculation about a move across the capital from Fulham, a hamstring injury meant that he didn't make his debut until November.

Utilised from the bench in his first three appearances for the Lilywhites, his first start came in the Champions League dead rubber against Bayern Munich.

While a number of players handed a rare start by Jose Mourinho didn't take their opportunity on that cold December night, Sessegnon did.

Starting on the left of a three behind Lucas Moura, the 19-year-old fired home brilliantly in the 20th minute to restore parity after Kingsley Coman had opened the scoring.

Sessegnon, as he had showed time and time again at Fulham, caused a host of problems down the left in the first half with a number of marauding runs.

Quieter in the second half as Bayern took control of the game to run out 3-1 winners, his performance at the Allianz Arena highlighted why Mauricio Pochettino was so keen to bring him to north London.

Limited to only seven appearances for Spurs since that night in Munich, the chance he has been waiting for may come his way in Germany once again this evening.

Already without a number of players for the Champions League Round of 16 second leg clash against RB Leipzig anyway, Mourinho was handed more bad news ahead of the match at the Red Bull Arena with Steven Bergwijn and Ben Davies ruled out.

The fact both are left-sided players means that there is a very good chance that Sessegnon will be handed a rare start against the Bundesliga high-flyers.

"Sessegnon must help us," said Mourinho in his pre-match press conference. "Ben Davies is not [here]. So it is between Ryan or [Jan[ Vertonghen to play left back.

"Tanganga, in a match where we need to attack, I don’t think Japhet can do it as a left back.

"Ryan can also give us options in attacking areas, he is basically a winger, so yes, we need everybody, especially without Steven who had adapted well and was performing very very well for us.

"I think it is time for Ryan to get his opportunity."

The head coach is a huge fan of the player and it is well documented that he did try to sign him when he was in charge of Manchester United.

While Mourinho may not have been able to give Sessegnon as many chances as he would have liked at Spurs so far, back in November he did state that he can be as good as Ashley Cole in the future due to his attributes.

Given very few are expecting the Lilywhites to progress to the final eight of the competition as they trail 1-0 from the first leg, tonight is the perfect occasion to show why he is rated so highly in the game.

However, it's still not clear at present where exactly he will play if he is given the nod by Mourinho.

There's a chance he may get in ahead of Jan Vertonghen at left back or left wing-back to give the team an extra attacking option down the flank, while he may play in a more advanced role as Erik Lamela may not be fit enough to start due to his recent issues.

Regardless of whereabouts he plays, Sessegnon has the opportunity to push on and shows his attacking qualities in a game when Spurs need him to deliver as they look to progress to the last eight of the competition against the odds.

A frustrating season for the player in terms of injuries and his lack of appearances, it would be fitting if it was out in Germany when he makes Tottenham fans sit up and take notice once again on a crucial night in their season.
