Jose Mourinho's "three balls" message as Tottenham boss makes Europa League promise

Jose Mourinho has shared a somewhat unusual post on his Instagram acccount in which he makes reference to his two previous triumphs in the Europa League.

The Tottenham manager is busy preparing his side for their first game in Group J of the competition on Thursday when they take on Austrian team LASK.

It comes off the back of a hugely disappointing result in the Premier League on Sunday in which Spurs blew a 3-0 lead against West Ham to concede three goals in the last eight minutes and draw 3-3.

On Wednesday afternoon Mourinho took to social media to share a picture of himself with two Europa League balls under one arm and one in the other.

Along with the photo he posted the caption: "3 balls... The 3 goals we conceded against West Ham? The 3 amazing goals we scored against them? Or the 2 Europa leagues I have in the pocket and the 3rd one I am ready to fight for?"

Supporters may take the post as a sign that the Europa League is a tournament Mourinho will be taking seriously this year as he looks to end Spurs' trophy drought, which now stretches to 12 years.

The Portuguese manager first won the competition with FC Porto in 2003, and then triumphed again with Manchester United in 2017.

Speaking ahead of the match again LASK in a press conference, Mourinho said: "It is difficult, it is a very long competition, the group phase is tricky then you go to the knockouts and you get teams coming from the Champions League which is very unfair.

"If you play Champions League and you don't qualify you go home. In the Europa League group phase if you finish third you go home, you don't have another competition to play.

"It is what it is. A very long competition and difficult, but at this moment let's focus on the points we need, 10, 11 points you need to qualify through the group stage."
