Jose Mourinho's 'surprise' Troy Parrott decision and when the Tottenham boss will play him

All eyes will be on the Tottenham teamsheet on Saturday afternoon to see if Troy Parrott is included in the matchday squad against Chelsea.

Having suffered a major blow on New Year's Day as Harry Kane limped off injured against Southampton, the Lilywhites were handed further bad news on Tuesday as it was confirmed that Son Heung-min would join the England captain on the sidelines after sustaining a fracture to his right arm.

Much has been made of Spurs' lack of numbers up top at present but Jose Mourinho has so far resisted the temptation of playing the Republic of Ireland international.

The 18-year-old, who recently signed a long-term deal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, plundered plenty of goals for the club's youngsters last campaign and that saw Mauricio Pochettino include him in the squad for the club's pre-season tour of Asia.

Making his senior debut for the side a couple of months later in the Carabao Cup game at Colchester United, Parrott was then handed his Premier League bow by Mourinho at the start of December as he came on for the final five minutes of the 5-0 demolition of Burnley.

He has yet to take to the pitch since for the first team and the calls for him to play will only get louder between now and the end of the season due to the team's limited numbers at such a crucial time in the campaign.

Speaking exclusively to football.london about the player's continued absence from the squad, ex-Spurs frontman Les Ferdinand stated that Parrott's chance will come when Mourinho believes the time is right.

"That's a strange one and it's easy to sit back and say Troy Parrott should be playing because he's the only recognised striker, but, although he's the only striker that we all recognise, he has to be good enough or the manager has to deem him good enough to play in the side," he said.

"We've seen on the international level he's done pretty well there, but there's a jump between playing in the U23s and playing in the first team in the Premier League on a regular basis.

"I think the manager will blood him and play him when he thinks the time is right."

Spurs' need for a frontman is clear for all to see and Parrott's omission continues to dominate the headlines in N17.

While throwing the 18-year-old straight into action from the first whistle isn't the answer as it could do him more harm than good, Ferdinand is puzzled as to why he hasn't been included on the bench and brought on in the closing stages if the team need a goal.

"I think that's the surprise really that he hasn't done that," he added. "Sometimes we're not privy to the reason why it hasn't happened, we just see a player and think he should be on the bench or he should be in the first team.

"When you're on the other side you understand why those things don't happen.

"I think that's the thing everybody would like to see is whether he's good enough in the end.

"The manager will make that decision when the right time is to do that."

Les Ferdinand was speaking to football.london ahead of Prostate Cancer UK's Football to Amsterdam bike ride in June.
