Jose Mourinho's preparations for postponed Fulham game and why Tottenham are unhappy

Tottenham are believed to be very unhappy over the late decision to postpone Wednesday night's Premier League game against Fulham, football.london understands.

Due to kick-off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at 6pm, reports on Tuesday evening suggested that the fixture was 'in doubt' following a number of Covid-19 cases at Fulham.

However, it wasn't until less than four hours away from the match getting underway when news broke that it indeed had been postponed.

Jose Mourinho had uploaded a video to his Instagram account just after 2pm of his coaching staff waiting around at the club's training base and he gave his thoughts on the uncertainty over the match.

"Match at 6pm... We still don't know if we play. Best league in the world," he captioned his video.

football.london understands that Mourinho and his Spurs team were ready to travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to play the game and that the club are not happy about a lack of communication with them from Fulham.

It's also believed that the Lilywhites are not pleased about a lack of clarity regarding the match for much of the past 24 hours.

However, football.london understands that once Fulham were made aware of the positive tests they followed protocols and contacted the Premier League. Once the Premier League were satisfied the club then brought it to the attention of Tottenham.

With Spurs now having to wait until Saturday afternoon to take to the pitch again as Leeds make the trip to N17, the club revealed in a statement that details of a new date for the Fulham match will be announced in due course.

"We can confirm that our Premier League home fixture against Fulham, scheduled to take place this evening (Wednesday 30 December), has been postponed," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The Premier League informed us of the decision this afternoon, with Fulham having requested the postponement on the grounds of the number of COVID-19 positive cases among their players and staff.

"Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends their best wishes to Fulham for a safe and speedy recovery to all those who are affected.

"Details of a new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course."

The Premier League also released a statement on the postponement and confirmed that they still have "full confidence" in its Covid-19 protocols and being able to continue to the play fixtures as scheduled despite Everton's game against Man City also not going ahead on Monday evening.

"The match between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, due to be played at 18:00 GMT this evening, has been postponed following a Premier League Board meeting this afternoon," read a statement on the Premier League website.

"Fulham lodged a request with the Premier League Board to rearrange the fixture following a significant rise in positive COVID-19 cases, as well as a number of players showing symptoms today.

"The Premier League Board has consulted its medical advisors and the decision to postpone the game has been taken as a precaution and with the health of players and staff as the priority. The group will now be retested immediately.

"With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.

"The League wishes those with COVID-19 a safe and speedy recovery and will rearrange the postponed fixture between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham in due course."
