Jose Mourinho's pointed appeal to "special" Harry Kane after Tottenham's win over Leicester

Jose Mourinho anointed Harry Kane as the new Special One after the England captain fired Tottenham to the gates of Europe.

Kane's two goals crowned a classic contain-and-destroy performance in which Spurs managed just 29 per cent possession.

And as Tottenham inflicted a potentially fatal blow to Leicester's hopes of a top-four finish, Mourinho said: “He is a guy who lives for family, for football and a little bit of golf – but he's an amazing professional.

“Everyone thinks he is a fantastic player and Tottenham is so lucky to have him – the player, the person and the Tottenham boy.

“All these things make him a special player for us that probably would not be so special for another team.

“Of course we want him to be happy and for him to be happy that means scoring goals.

“I'm so happy that after an incredibly difficult injury he is now back in the right direction because he has made an incredible effort to get fit.

“Even before the sad situation with Covid-19 he was working hard to be back for the last five or six games of the season.”

Spurs had to survive 24 shots and 13 corners, but Mourinho insisted: "I think we were strategically good.

"We knew what worked for us.

“Brendan Rodgers did an amazing job since he arrived but in this moment he is in a little bit of trouble with injuries.

“We tried to be very fast after recovering the ball.

"We did that very well in the first half and in the second half it was about being compact and getting the result.”

Kane returned the compliment to his manager, saying: "It was hard for him to come in and put his stamp on things but we have been able to do that in the last three wins.

"It's must one of those teams I seem to score a few against. We caught them on the break today and once we got ahead we just steadied the ship. The clean sheet was great."
