Jose Mourinho's plan for Carlos Vinicius and why Newcastle wish may not be granted

Jose Mourinho's Tottenham team selection on Sunday at Newcastle United is going to be rather interesting following the win at Aston Villa last time out.

In desperate need of three points with intense pressure on his shoulders after two dire performances away at Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb, the experienced head coach really made a statement with his bold starting XI at Villa Park.

Youngsters Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga came in as he went with a rather inexperienced backline, with Giovani Lo Celso starting in midfield after only just making his return off the bench in Croatia following three months out injured.

One of Mourinho's other notable selections saw Carlos Vinicius handed only his second Premier League start as he was paired upfront with Harry Kane.

The changes did work for Spurs as they returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory following goals from both frontmen.

It certainly wasn't a classic by any stretch of the imagination and rather ugly at times, but three points is three points and that's exactly what the boss needed.

Mourinho now must decide if he goes with the same XI again this weekend at St James' Park or if he changes things up slightly as he looks to make it two wins on the bounce in their quest for a top-four finish.

Vinicius did catch the eye during the game in the Midlands but he could potentially be the player set to drop down to the bench if the 58-year-old opts to switch things about.

Taking a rare opportunity in the Premier League with a goal, Vinicius worked extremely hard throughout the 90 minutes and you could see how much his first league strike meant to him as he tapped home following some great play from Lucas Moura.

However, as well as he did, Mourinho is going to have Erik Lamela back from suspension for the trip to the north east after his dismissal at Arsenal saw him miss out last time.

There's a very good chance Son Heung-min could also be available once again following the hamstring injury he sustained in the defeat at the Emirates.

As reported by football.london prior to the international break, the South Korean's injury wasn't as bad as first feared and he could be back in time for the Newcastle game if he didn't make a swift recovery and play at Aston Villa.

Getting a much-needed rest over the past two weeks with the Premier League on pause, all will be hoping he is fit to return and Mourinho will provide an update on his player when he speaks to the media to preview the game on Friday afternoon.

While the 4-4-2 they went with against Dean Smith's side did work as they came out on top, Spurs are definitely more suited to a 4-2-3-1 formation and that means Vinicius will be the favourite to miss out if they revert to their usual setup.

Perhaps harsh on the 26-year-old if that is the case, Mourinho will go with the team he believes is best to get three points and that will likely contain Son if he is fighting fit and raring to go.

A start ahead of the South Korea international and Lamela, however, and it will be an incredible show of faith in the player from the manager.

Seizing his chance last time out with a strong performance and a goal, Vinicius has proved to Mourinho that he can make a real impact in the league and that will only stand him in good stead for the remainder of the season as he looks to earn a permanent contract in N17.

Mourinho needs players he can trust at present to get the job done and the loanee is certainly one of those as he demonstrated in the win at Aston Villa.
