Jose Mourinho's odd response as he refuses to explain why Tottenham give up leads

Jose Mourinho says he knows exactly why his Tottenham side often give up leads in matches, but he "may never" tell the media the cause of the trait which has blighted the club's season.

In the past month alone Spurs took the lead in the north London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium only to lose 2-1, they led 2-1 with five minutes remaining at Newcastle before being held to a draw, and they were 1-0 up at half-time against Manchester United last Sunday before falling to a 3-1 defeat.

In addition, Spurs carried a 2-0 lead into their Europa League last-16 second leg against Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia only to embarrassingly lose 3-2 on aggregate and crash out of the competition.

But in an odd press conference prior to Friday night's trip to Everton, Mourinho urged the media to look on the positive side of the surrendered leads.

"I know why it (losing leads) happened and I know also that you can look at it from a different perspective," he said.

"A team that starts matches well, and a team that starts winning matches, means something positive.

"It means something positive that you (the media) like to forget, the positive aspect of that.

"But I agree with you in the sense of when you are in winning positions and you lose points from winning positions, there are also negative things side-to-side to it."

Mourinho was then pressed on just what it was that was leading to the concession of the advantage in matches.

"That’s what I’m not ready to discuss with you," he said.

"I think it has to do with some of our qualities as a team, but I am not ready to discuss with you."

Then when pressed if he would ever reveal the reason, he added: "Maybe never."

Spurs are seventh in the table ahead of the clash with eighth-placed Everton at Goodison Park.
