Tottenham supporters have endured seismic changes in the past 24 hours, with the club confirming their position in the European Super League and axing Jose Mourinho.
The announcement of Mourinho's departure comes less than 48 hours before the Premier League clash against Southampton and just days before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley.
It brings an end to Mourinho's 17 months in charge of the north London side, having succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as manager in November 2019.
Despite the shortcomings in that period, Mourinho's departure, and particularly the timing of it, came as a surprise.
Mourinho last spoke to the press following a 2-2 draw against Everton on Friday evening, which provided a blow to the top-four hopes and Champions League qualification - which is, of course, now redundant amid the European Super League confirmation.
Following that draw, Mourinho was asked whether his team responded well to the changes he made and replied: "I think it's not about the changes. It's not about the system. It's a system that we played before, it's a system that many teams they play. It's a system that you could feel that Everton, even defending in a 4-4-2 they were dealing with three and two wing-backs.
"I don't think it's about the system but I believe that the result is one that's not bad and it's not good. Were we perfect? No. Were we bad? Also no."
Prior to the match, Mourinho was asked about his thoughts on concussion substitutions and the push for them to become temporary and, while the subject was different, his response may give an insight into his opinion on the Super League and forthcoming changes to football.
"I think it makes sense but I’ve learned over the past couple of years to be just quiet and my opinion is not important than to accept what is coming.
"So many different rules or things changing, you have just to accept the way it is, but in a very simple comment I think it makes sense."
