Jose Mourinho's bold prediction on his first day at Tottenham that is already on track

Jose Mourinho today marks one year as Tottenham Hotspur head coach.

Taking on the hotseat last November following Daniel Levy's decision to part with Mauricio Pochettino, the 57-year-old's first 12 months in the job have seen plenty of ups and downs.

Having to put up with a number of injuries to key players in his opening few months that ultimately wrecked his top-four dream, things are now going according to plan for the experienced boss.

The Premier League table does make for good reading for all Tottenham fans at present with the team sitting second in the standings after eight games.

The Lilywhites are only one point behind Leicester City but they could potentially jump ahead of the Foxes this weekend if results go in their favour.

Hosting Man City at home on Saturday evening as they look to make it three wins on the bounce in N17 over Pep Guardiola's men, Leicester face a mouthwatering clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Premier League title appears there for the taking this year going on the unpredictable start to the new season and someone could take full advantage.

Liverpool are in a good position at present to regain the trophy but the news that both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez could be out for the remainder of the season may potentially see them drop points over the coming months.

Man City, who sit in tenth, haven't exactly looked convincing in their first seven games, with fellow top-six rivals Arsenal and Manchester United struggling and Chelsea very unpredictable.

That means the trophy could potentially go to an outside, with a few people predicting Mourinho's men to go all the way and cause a major shock.

The head coach has so far downplayed his side's chances of winning the top prize and he will no doubt continue to do the same in his upcoming press conferences.

Well, Mourinho did in fact make quite a bold statement this time last year when he took his seat to speak to the press as Tottenham head coach for the very first time.

"We cannot win the Premier League this season. We can – I’m not saying we will do – we can win it next season," he confessed when asked if he could repeat his Porto triumph having stated following his appointment midway through 2001/02 that they could win the league the following year.

Some people may have scoffed at his answer but his Spurs team do have the potential to go all the way and lift the famous trophy in May.

Key to that will be coming through their upcoming fixtures unscathed.

Returning to Premier League action on Saturday with Man City visiting N17, Chelsea, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Leicester, Wolves and Fulham then follow before the year is out.

Extremely tough games on paper for the Lilywhites, it is worth pointing out that Spurs will go into the fixtures full of confidence going on their recent form and no side will want to face them at present.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have been exceptional this term and played a major role in the team's rise up the league table, while Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Gareth Bale are still to find their best form and that is only a good thing for Spurs.

There is so much more to come from Mourinho's team and having a proven winner in charge only bodes well for the future given his success in Europe since first becoming a head coach all the way back in 2000.

There is still such a long way to go in the 2020/21 season but Mourinho's bold prediction when Tottenham were languishing in the bottom half of the table last November could in fact come true.
