Jose Mourinho reveals the only piece of advice Sir Alex Ferguson gave him at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted him to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli while he was Manchester United boss.

Mourinho now manages the England star at Tottenham, but said on the upcoming Amazon Prime documentary about Spurs that Ferguson had been keen for Alli to come to United.

Ferguson gave the Portuguese "one piece of advice" during his United tenure, which was to swoop for the Spurs playmaker, whose first game against United was as a teenager for MK Dons in the now infamous 4-0 League Cup defeat in 2014. An 18-year-old Alli ran riot against a second string United side that night.

That was against Louis van Gaal's United and it's clear Alli made an impression on Ferguson, even after he then moved to Tottenham, as Mourinho revealed.

"Sir Alex Ferguson gave me one piece of advice in two-and-a-half years [at United]. Buy Dele Alli," said Mourinho.

"That guy, with that mentality, the aggression he has in his mind, this guy is a Manchester United player. And he has a good eye for a player, but he is not a good trainer and we need to find the right motivation for him.

"I told Dele very directly he doesn't train well. I'm not saying a disaster, but I'm not saying he is like Harry Kane."
