Jose Mourinho reveals text message exchange with Harry Kane during Euro 2020

Jose Mourinho has been messaging England captain Harry Kane throughout Euro 2020, the former Tottenham boss has revealed.

There was a lot of criticism aimed at Kane for not scoring during the tournament's group stage, with Raheem Sterling's boot guiding England to two 1-0 wins over Croatia and the Czech Republic.

But the Spurs star found his scoring boots in the Three Lions' 2-0 last-16 victory against Germany which then inspired a brace in the 4-0 quarter-final win over Ukraine.

A lot of fans and pundits now tip Kane to win the Golden Boot but his former club boss says the striker doesn't care about the award.

He told The Sun : "I don't like to disturb players at tournaments — but I did exchange a couple of messages with Harry Kane.

"He was never worried when he was not scoring and I don’t think Kane gives a damn about winning the Golden Boot.

"He just wants to win the title and I think they all have that mentality in the England camp."

Manager Gareth Southgate will be hoping his star man can continue finding his form in their semi-final against Denmark on Wednesday.

However, the Three Lions boss said the goalscoring duties cannot always be left at Kane's door.

He said: “We know with Harry and Raheem … their goalscoring record with us has been immense.

"We cannot just expect Harry to be the one to deliver so Raheem has weighed in at a crucial moment and is looking electric but if we can get Harry scoring as well that is great for us as a team."

He added: “The life of a centre-forward is a lot of pressure. There is a huge expectation and, although at times it would feel from the outside it is a glamorous position to be in and they certainly get paid well, it comes with immense pressure and expectation.

"It is important as a manager to understand that and have empathy with that.

“Not only is there the public expectation but there is also an inherent desire and drive that centre-forwards have that if you win the game and they don’t score, they are irritated. They cannot help that. That is the mindset of the top players."

And while Mourinho says Kane wasn't worried about not scoring, it seems he was "elated" to get his first goal against Germany.

He said: “The goal against Germany goes pretty much to the top of the list [of goals I've scored for England]."
