Jose Mourinho has called on his Tottenham players to focus on themselves in the battle to finish in the Premier League top four.
Spurs were handed a surprise boost as London rivals Chelsea were humbled 5-2 at home by relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion yesterday, leaving the Blues just three points ahead of Mourinho's men and two ahead of Liverpool, who won 3-0 at Arsenal.
As a result, Tottenham could go above Chelsea into fourth with a win at Newcastle United, with Spurs having a better goal difference.
But the Spurs boss has said that Chelsea's defeat will not change anything for his side, adding that he and his players know what they must do as they look to try and inflict more misery on the Magpies, who are just two points ahead of third from bottom Fulham.
“No, I don’t feel any relation to that result, it doesn’t change our perspective of a game at a time and this is just Chelsea," Mourinho said, speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game.
"Liverpool won, maybe Everton wins, maybe West Ham wins, so what we have to do is try to get a good result in the matches we play.”
Meanwhile, Mourinho has defended Tottenham's recent form in the wake of criticism following their defeats against Dinamo Zagreb and Arsenal prior to the international break.
Spurs did bounce back with a 2-0 win against Aston Villa at Villa Park prior to the break, and Mourinho has said that he feels Tottenham are actually among the form teams in the division, despite the defeats.
“It depends on the way you look at what happened before," he said.
"You can say two bad defeats or you can say five victories in six matches [in all competitions].
"So it depends on how you want to look at it."
Spurs found themselves behind at St James' Park after Joelinton gave Newcastle the lead just after the half hour mark, only for Harry Kane to equalise moments later, before the England international then gave Tottenham the lead with his second of the game.
