Jose Mourinho responds to Manchester United's penalty record ahead of Tottenham Hotspur game

Jose Mourinho insists he is unconcerned about Manchester United's penalty record ahead of facing his Spurs side.

The former United boss has made consistent references to how many penalties the Reds have been awarded over the last 12 months, including aiming a dig at Bruno Fernandes for how many spot-kicks he has scored in the race for the Golden Boot this season.

Mourinho's words led United captain Harry Maguire to suggest comments from rivals had turned referees against the Reds after he was disappointed not to be given a penalty in February's 1-1 draw with West Brom.

Yet, when asked about United's penalty record in the build-up to Sunday's game against his Spurs side, Mourinho played it coy.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives update on the future of Edinson Cavani

The 58-year-old said he cannot go into a game feeling concerned over issues such as that.

He said: "I cannot go to a football match concerned. I can’t, I don’t think it’s the right frame of mind to go to a match concerned, so I’m not going concerned and I don’t want my players to go to.

"We have to go with positive feelings and go with the dimension and difficulty of the game. Coping with pressure. That’s what I want.

"I want to be positive and happy to play against such a giant club with such a good team and with the ambition to win the points.

"When the game starts, the points are going to be there on the grass."

Mourinho previously hit out at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the United boss joked about his predecessor measuring the goalposts before Spurs' Europa League tie with Shkendija in September.

He said: "I understand that for him the dimensions of the goalposts are not important for him.

"What is important for him are the dimensions of the 18-yard box.

"He would never accept to play with a 17-yard box. I think he would prefer a 22-yard box. For him it would be better."
