Jose Mourinho responds to Dele Alli transfer questions as Tottenham receive big injury boost

Here is your Tottenham morning digest for Saturday, January 16.

Alli's time at Tottenham 'is up'

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips says Dele Alli's time at Tottenham 'is up'.

Alli posted a picture of himself looking unimpressed on Instagram after he was left on the bench for Spurs' draw with Fulham.

“His time is up," Phillips said when asked about the post by Football Insider.

“As much as he loves Tottenham, Mourinho is not going anywhere quick. He is doing good things there. He is turning Spurs into a title-challenging side.

“I did not get carried away with Dele Alli’s performance against Marine – he should be shining against them. It did not surprise me that he played well.

“I think his time at Spurs is over, he cannot be going into training excited. He must be unhappy going in because even if he does not train well, it is unlikely he will be involved.

“Alli needs to be playing week in, week out. Unfortunately, his time at the club is coming to an end.”

Mourinho coy on Alli transfer talk

Mourinho has batted away questions on whether Alli could leave the club this month.

"It’s not a question that I am comfortable to answer," he said when asked about Alli's potential departure.

"Of course I would know how to answer you, but I am not ready to answer, I am not ready to make public my vision of the situation. I am sorry about that but I’m not going to answer."

Mourinho was then asked whether in a general sense he would be willing to let a first-team player leave without signing a replacement.

"You are asking that question in a general way but you are, of course, speaking about Dele so the question that you are asking me is if I would let Dele go without getting a player in exchange and I’m not going to answer that question to you," he responded.

Bergwijn back in contention

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Steven Bergwijn is in contention to return to action for Tottenham on Sunday against Sheffield United.

"Yeah, he was ill," said the head coach when asked if Bergwijn was OK after his Fulham absence.

"He was ill the week before, the week of Marine and then he trained with the team only one day, which was the day before we played Fulham."

When quizzed about those muscular problems he mentioned after the Leeds game, he added: "No, no, was not a muscular injury. Was not that. He was ill, was not even coming to the training ground for a few days."

Bergwijn has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season, starting seven times in the league.
