Jose Mourinho rejects idea of Champions League change due to love of facing "enemies"

Jose Mourinho isn't in favour of the Champions League switching to a one-legged knockout format because he loves coming up against "enemies" on the continent.

Both European football's premier competition and its secondary one, the Europa League, have switched to one-legged matches in one country as the end of this season is completed amid the coronavirus crisis.

Bayern Munich will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Lisbon on Sunday night, with the Europa League final between Inter Milan and Sevilla taking place in Cologne on Friday.

With the Champions League in particular seeing some thrilling quarter-final ties, including Bayern's 8-2 win over Barcelona and PSG's last-gasp, come from behind victory over Atalanta, there had been some suggestions that the current format could be rolled out as standard in future.

But Mourinho - who won the competition with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010 - is still in favour of two-legged ties from the last-16 phase through to the semi-finals, and says it produces worthy champions.

"Because football is for the fans and because football is a lot about the passion and about being mentally very strong to cope with big matches, big semi-finals, big quarter-finals, and go away and play against 70,000, let’s say enemies, and I love this feeling," he told DAZN, via Goal.com.

"You have to be very strong to play two legs and to play with the mental side of it. I think the one leg is better for the outsider, if you are an outsider you play a single match an anything can happen, but I like the big pressure of the two legs.

"And it also measures your resilience because you play the semi-final and two or three days later you have a big match in your domestic league, and you have to cope with all these things.

"You have to make big decisions and across the season as a whole, I prefer the double leg."

Mourinho's Tottenham will be in the Europa League in the coming season, with their first qualifier taking place on September 17.
