Jose Mourinho receives timely Harry Kane injury boost after Tottenham's loss at Brighton

Jose Mourinho says there is "pretty good news" regarding Harry Kane and the Tottenham striker may be back in action sooner than expected.

Kane, 27, suffered an ankle injury during the first half of Spurs' 3-1 defeat by Liverpool last Thursday and was taken off at the interval.

Mourinho was downbeat about the injury to his star man after the match and it was feared the England captain could be out for a number of months.

In Kane's absence, Spurs were toothless going forward as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Brighton on Sunday night - a result which leaves them sixth in the Premier League.

But Tottenham may have their talisman back soon, with Mourinho confirming Kane could return within "a couple of weeks".

The Portuguese told Spurs' official website : "The news is pretty good news. After Liverpool, no idea. Then the next day, we were thinking about three weeks, something like that.

"I don’t want to be super-optimistic, but Harry is optimistic, he has the experience of some injuries in his ankles and in Harry’s mind, it’s a couple of weeks, so let’s see if he’s right."

Kane has been in world-class form this season and has already racked up 12 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League.

His displays across all competitions have been just as stellar and his total goal involvements stands at 33 in 29 games.

Before Kane returns from injury, and despite Tottenham's tepid display against the Seagulls, Mourinho is confident Spurs' other attackers can step up.

"It is a crucial moment for him he is feeling better and better and of course when you lose a player of Harry's quality and dimension the other guys have to step up and hopefully he can help us," said Mourinho.

“Harry Kane is Harry Kane. There are players in some teams that are not replaceable but one thing is to have, like last season, three or four attacking players out injured at the same time.

"But another thing is to have Harry Kane out because of course we have [Carlos] Vinicius, [Steven] Bergwijn, Lucas [Moura], [Erik] Lamela, Gareth Bale and if I've forgotten anyone I apologise for that. It is a different situation because we have attacking players."
