Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Steven Bergwijn is in contention to return to action for Tottenham on Sunday against Sheffield United.
A regular in the Spurs XI of late, the Dutchman was not even in the matchday 20 on Wednesday evening for the 1-1 draw against Fulham.
Revealing after the 3-0 win over Leeds United just after New Year that the 23-year-old has been "accumulating physical problems" that are stopping him from training properly now and again, many believed that Bergwijn's absence was down to that after he didn't play in the cup wins over Brentford and Marine.
Moussa Sissoko was the one given the nod in midweek against Fulham but Bergwijn looks set to be an option for this weekend's trip to Bramall Lane after recovering from illness.
"Yeah, he was ill," said the head coach when asked if Bergwijn was OK after his Fulham absence. "He was ill the week before, the week of Marine and then he trained with the team only one day, which was the day before we played Fulham.
When quizzed about those muscular problems he mentioned after the Leeds game, he added: "No, no, was not a muscular injury. Was not that. He was ill, was not even coming to the training ground for a few days."
While Bergwijn could be handed his chance in the team again in South Yorkshire, one player who will definitely be missing is Giovani Lo Celso.
The Argentine has not featured since coming off injured against Leicester City prior to Christmas and Mourinho previously indicated that it would be a "few weeks" before he was fit to return.
Asked if the ex-Real Betis man was the only player out for the Sheffield United encounter, he said: “Yes, I think so. Gio of course is not. And we still have two training sessions before the game. But I believe no more problems in principle.”
Tottenham fans will be hoping Lo Celso is back towards the end of January with Wycombe Wanderers, Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion all to come before the month is out.
