Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is set to join Roma this summer when his contract at Old Trafford expires.
The Argentine has been an outcast at United this season and has not featured in a single minute for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this campaign.
The 34-year-old has clocked 61 first-team appearances for the club since joining in the summer of 2015 as a free agent.
A report in the Telegraph now outlines how former United boss Jose Mourinho has identified the goalkeeper as a transfer target at Roma, where he has been appointed on a three-year contract.
The two are said to have enjoyed a strong working relationship and indeed Romero made a season-best tally of 18 appearances at United in Mourinho’s first campaign at the helm - including 12 outings in the club’s successful Europa League victory.
However, Romero is now set to leave United when his contract expires on 30 June and has now been linked with a move to Roma, which would reunite him with Mourinho.
The shot-stopper already has experience in Italian football, having been on the books of Sampdoria between 2011 and 2015, where he made 74 appearances and established himself as first-choice goalkeeper at international level for Argentina.
There is expected to be a goalkeeper shake-up at United this summer with Dean Henderson now established as the club’s first choice going into next season.
Henderson appears to be preferred over David De Gea - who could leave the club either permanently or on loan this summer - while the contracts of Romero and veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant are both set to expire.
The report adds that former United youth graduate Tom Heaton, 35, is tipped to return to Old Trafford from Aston Villa this summer and is expected to act as a back-up to Henderson next season.
