Jose Mourinho pinpoints big reason behind Spurs' struggles amid record defeat against Chelsea

Here is your Spurs morning digest for Friday, February 5.

Mourinho pinpoints Spurs' reasons for struggle

"Well, Reguilon means something for our attacking football," Mourinho told reporters when asked what the difference was between now and earlier in the season. "Harry Kane means something for our attacking football.

"Gio Lo Celso again means something for our attacking football. A good Dele Alli that we didn't have yet but hope that we can have in the future means something for us.

"It's not just what they mean, they mean that we don't have many options to rotate players and we finish with people with some signs of fatigue because of the accumulation of matches because we don't have so many players to rest.

"The second thing is confidence. The confidence levels are very, very important to play football. When a team doesn't have good results, a period when results are not good, you need that click back to go back to normality. So for me it's a little bit like that."

Mourinho's record defeat

The loss against Chelsea was the first time Mourinho has ever suffered back-to-back home defeats in the Premier League.

The losses against Liverpool and the Blues added to a defeat away at Brighton do not make good reading for Spurs fans, who were eyeing a title tilt at one stage of the season.

It was an uninspiring defeat against Thomas Tuchel's side, with rival fans noting similarities between the performance and similar games during Mourinho's reigns elsewhere.

Big criticism for Spurs

Rio Ferdinand said there was no personality in Spurs' play against Chelsea, and that without Harry Kane in the team, there is no confidence or character.

"It was an aimless performance. There was nothing about it, there was no personality. It seems like if Harry Kane doesn't play, the personality is drained straight out," he told BT Sport.

"No confidence, no character, no leader, there's nobody driving that team and whether that just comes from the players or the management that have to push that into the team, I think it's a combination of both and it just doesn't seem to be happening.

"We saw against Brighton, they were a team that looked like they were going for Champions League football and Spurs were just looking to stay out of the relegation zone, if you looked at it and didn't know where they were in the league.

"It's worrying for me. They're not far off the Champions League in terms of points but the way that they are performing in the last couple of games, that's a big worry for me.

"They rely on individuals. It doesn't strike me as a team philosophy, it's a case of get the ball to Kane or Heung-Min Son and we'll just stay at the back here. That's the concern for me as well."
