Jose Mourinho picks six Liverpool stars in Champions League team of the year - but no Manchester United players

Jose Mourinho has named six Liverpool players in his Champions League team of the season.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager has been waxing lyrical about the Reds after they claimed their sixth European Cup on Saturday night.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi handed Jurgen Klopp's side a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

And Mourinho has now continued with his Liverpool praise by naming his European team of the year, with Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Salah all getting the nod in the 56-year-old's starting XI.

But the Portuguese failed to find room for any Manchester United players in his side, despite managing the Red Devils in this season's competition.

Mourinho was sacked by the Old Trafford club in December, and his latest views perhaps show how far apart he now sees both sides.

"I go to Alisson, especially because [in the final] he was there when the needed him to be there," the two-time Champions League winner told Russia Today show 'On the Touchline with José Mourinho' when asked to explain his decision.

He added: "The two full-backs also have to be Liverpool players, amazing players, [Trent] Alexander-Arnold and [Andy] Robertson. Amazing character and personality. One [Alexander-Arnold] is a local boy, another [Robertson] is a Scottish boy that a few years ago was relegated with Hull City.

"And both they are physical, they are aggressive, they are what I call in football 'the good arrogance', they are not afraid to play, they go forward, they participate in attack. And even in a game on Saturday under huge pressure they were very, very good.

"Van Dijk is a king, he is a huge personality. Positionally, a top, top player."

Ajax trio Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek, along with Christian Eriksen and Lionel Messi, make up the rest of Mourinho's side.
