Jose Mourinho opens up on the thoughts he had ahead of taking the job at Tottenham

New Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho said he always felt that he might return to management mid-season.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager is back in the Premier League with Spurs , having succeeded Mauricio Pochettino in north London.

And Mourinho, who has been out of management since leaving Manchester United last December, insists that he always felt that another opportunity might come his way, adding that he cannot complain about having little time to prepare his new side for the game against West Ham this weekend.

"I thought about it during these months because I thought I might get a job mid-season and I might have a game two days later. We have our own ways but they were in the hands of a good manager and coaching staff here," he said, speaking in his first press conference as Spurs head coach."

Meanwhile, he said he felt ready to support the Spurs players as Tottenham look to climb the table, having endured a disappointing start to the season, with the Lilywhites siting in 14th place after 12 games.

Jose Mourinho's career in numbers

"I'm not going to make the same mistakes. I'm going to make new mistakes. I'm going to be stronger. From an emotional point of view I'm relaxed, motivated and ready and I think the players felt that these two days," he said.

"I'm ready and I'm here to support them. In life you go through periods like this, where it's not about myself, it's about my players and my club."
