Jose Mourinho on scouting mission as Tottenham boss watches Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig

Jose Mourinho was on a scouting mission on Sunday as the Tottenham manager took a trip to Germany to watch Bayern Munich's goalless draw with RB Leipzig.

The Spurs boss was sat in the stands at Bayern's Munich home - the Allianz Arena - and would have no doubt had his eyes on the visiting side for several reasons.

Tottenham go head-to-head with Leipzig later this month in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie before travelling to Germany for the return leg in early March.

And, with Leipzig holding the hosts to a draw and only trailing their league-leading rivals by one point, Mourinho will certainly be wary of the threat they pose.

Leipzig's team performance may not have been the only reason for Mourinho visiting Munich, though.

The former Manchester United manager may have been keeping tabs on Dayot Upamecano, who is wanted by Spurs' north London rivals Arsenal.

The 21-year-old was ever-present for RB Leipzig last season and has now cemented his place as a regular starter for the title-chasing German team at centre-back.

According to Bild, the Frenchman has a £50million release clause in his current contract which has alerted top clubs from around Europe.

And with Jan Vertonghen looking likely to leave in the summer when his current deal expires, Spurs will be on the lookout for new additions at the back.

That makes Upamecano an appealing prospect for the north Londoners, though it remains to be seen if Mourinho will prioritise the signing of a big-money defender.

The Portuguese boss, meanwhile, would not have have been blown away by what he saw on Sunday.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern drew 0-0 with RB Leipzig, missing their chance to increase their lead at the top of the table, with their opponents staying a point behind in second place.

The Bavarians, top on 43 points, enjoyed possession in a dominant first half but failed to score despite chances from Robert Lewandowski and Thiago Alcantara.

They were lucky not to concede a goal in the second half with their opponents lurking on the break, but they also saw Lucas Hernandez and Kingsley Coman return to action after long injury breaks.
