Jose Mourinho on Manchester City FFP allegations: ‘I have thoughts from a few years ago’

Jose Mourinho delivered a cryptic response to allegations Manchester City are guilty of financial wrongdoing.

The Premier League champions have been accused of misleading Uefa in a bid to avoid Financial Fair Play (FFP) penalties.

German magazine Der Spiegel claims leaked emails and documents reveal the full extent of City’s misconduct, which includes inflating sponsorship deals to hide the levels of investment from their Abu Dhabi owners.

Mourinho, who has been open about the difficulty of keeping up with City’s incredible spending, resisted the opportunity to weigh into the contentious debate.

“I have thoughts from a few years ago, but I keep the thoughts to myself,” said the United manager ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie with Juventus.

Der Spiegel’s reports come after emails and documents were obtained by the website Football Leaks.

They claim City took significant measures to disguise the funding of owner Sheikh Mansour as Uefa tried to clampdown on reckless spending.

City have refused to comment on what they claim is an ‘organised and clear’ attempt to damage their reputation.

But Pep Guardiola addressed the issue on Tuesday, saying: “Of course I trust the club and what they have done. Of course we want to follow the rules. Uefa, Fifa and the Premier League do what they have to do.

“Believe me, I’m completely honest. I don’t know what happened, I’m a manager, focussed on the pitch, the locker room.

“I am a manager. I’m completely out of how we handle this situation. I’m part of the club, I support the club. We want to do what we have to do in terms of the rules.”
