Jose Mourinho on his 'amazing' Scotland connection as he backs Steve Clarke for Euro 2020 play-off glory

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho insists he will be cheering on Scotland in their play-off against Serbia tonight as he revealed his "amazing" connection with the country.

The Portuguese did some of his coaching badges at Largs and went on to become one of the most successful coaches in the world.

He had Steve Clarke as his assistant at Chelsea when they won back-to-back Premier League titles, and gave Scott McTominay his breakthrough at Manchester United.

And the Spurs manager confirmed he will be backing Scotland in Belgrade, confident Clarke's troops can use their guts to win the glory.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: "Matic is not in the Serbian national team anymore so my emotional connection with them is gone with Nemanja.

"In Scotland there's Steve, there's McTominay. I've got a good connection with Scotland too, I spent amazing times there when I studied there.

"So of course I wish them well.

"Steve was a good, loyal assistant that I had and then his career went in another direction.

"Now being the national coach of his beloved country for sure means a lot for him.

"It's a very difficult match, I would say that Serbia probably have more potential.

"But many times in football soul, or state of mind, makes the difference.

"And the Scottish guys probably are up to it."
