Jose Mourinho is not worth his reported bumper pay packet at Tottenham of up to £13 million a year, John McDonnell said today.
The shadow chancellor and Liverpool fan added that no footballer should be paid £250,000 a week.
Asked whether the new Tottenham head coach, right, is worth his reported salary, he said: “I don’t think he is.”
He added: “Clubs need to have greater respect for their supporters who are the lifeblood of the sport and whose wages simply do not compare.”
If Labour wins power it would probe football’s governance, regulation, ownership rules, support and funding of clubs “vital to local communities” and legislate for accredited football supporters’ trusts to be able to appoint and remove at least two club directors and purchase shares when clubs change hands.
