Jose Mourinho names the Tottenham star who impressed him in Manchester City defeat

Tottenham have faced fresh criticism in the wake of their 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at the weekend.

Spurs ended up being well beaten by the Premier League leaders at the Etihad Stadium, with a Rodri penalty and two goals from Ilkay Gundogan sealing all three points for the hosts.

Following the game, Spurs have been criticised by several pundits for individual mistakes, while former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp claimed that his old side were "passive" in the defeat against Pep Guardiola's men.

But Spurs boss Jose Mourinho chose to reflect on the positives after the game and one of those for him was the performance of Japhet Tanganga.

Brought in for his first Premier League start of the season - and just his eighth appearance in all competitions this season for Spurs - the 21-year-old was singled out by Mourinho for his performance after the game.

“Japhet did very well,” he told the club’s official website.

“He’s a positive – a young guy, an academy guy, a club guy coming into the game and the game, of course, not easy.

“I didn’t feel that he had any problems and that he was in control against good players and a good team, and when the team is not physically well, then minute after minute, you start opening up spaces, not the same recoveries from the midfield players or the centre-backs.

“He had a few situations in the second half, but a complete performance from the kid.”

Tanganga had previously only featured for Spurs in cup competitions so far this season, with his last appearance prior to the defeat at the Etihad Stadium coming in a 4-1 win in the FA Cup against Wycombe Wanderers.

But now, having been praised by his manager, he will be hoping for more game time in the coming weeks as Spurs return to Europa League action and face a hectic schedule in the league, with 15 games still to play.
