Jose Mourinho names the 'future captain' of Tottenham who could be loaned out next season

Jose Mourinho has labelled Oliver Skipp as a "future captain" of Tottenham following the midfielder's decision to sign a new contract at the club.

The academy ace's previous deal was due to expire at the end of the 2020/21 campaign but he has now committed his future to Spurs until 2024.

Making his debut under Mauricio Pochettino in October 2018, the player has had to make do with appearances here and there under the Argentine's replacement so far due to the number of midfielders in N17.

Given his lack of regular action, Mourinho has claimed that the England U21 international wants to head out on loan next campaign so that he can develop his game.

As his long-term future is at the club after penning an extension, the head coach fully believes that his player has what it takes to one day captain the side.

"I'm really happy. Everybody in the club is, his team-mates are, I am and Skippy is or not he wouldn't sign the contract," the Portuguese boss told football.london at his press conference.

"I think he's genuinely Tottenham's future. He's one of these players by human quality, by personality, he is one of these kids that I have no doubt he will be an important player for Tottenham.

"Sometimes coaches are selfish and I told him that. I never told him I want him to go on loan, I always told him I wanted him to stay here, because that's the selfish perspective of a coach who wants the best possible squad.

"In his mind he wants to go on loan, six months, the whole season. He feels that he needs that, I also feel that would be good for his evolution, so maybe that is the direction we go.

"I think he can be more than a player, he can be a future captain here. Hugo, Harry. I see this kid being one day a future captain here by his character, by his personality.

"I feel really happy that he signed."
