Jose Mourinho name-checks Liverpool and Man Utd while defending Harry Kane

Jose Mourinho has launched a staunch defence of Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker was accused by some of dangerous play.

Kane came under criticism from some quarters for the way in which he won a penalty during Spurs' 2-1 win against Brighton on Sunday.

The England striker appeared to anticipate a challenge from Adam Lallana and backed into the Seagulls midfielder while he was in the air.

There have been suggestions that such methods could cause serious injury to his opponents, but speaking ahead of Spurs' Europa League game against Ludogorets on Thursday Mourinho was far from pleased with a question about Kane's 'clever' play.

"What are you speaking about? What are you speaking about?" he said.

"Harry Kane was in a position to control the ball and Lallana came in a reckless fashion. Why are you saying it is clever?

"Clever is taking the ball and scoring a goal. It's a foul. I thought it was a direct free-kick but VAR said it was inside the box because it was on the line. What are we talking about being clever?

"Harry Kane just wants to score goals. Lallana was reckless. Why are you speaking about us?

"Speak about Liverpool, Manchester United, City and others with 'clever' players and getting penalties. Don't speak about Harry Kane."

Mourinho also added to his comments following the Brighton game that he would be checking Spanish media to check their reaction to Gareth Bale's winner.

He continued: "Some of the press said I was going to look at Real Madrid's website but I didn't say that.

"I just said about the Spanish media, the media that used to not be very nice with Gareth and yes I read and yes they were very fair with him and the connection with Reguilon, another player from Spain.

"They were very honest and I'm happy about that."

Mourinho confirmed that Sergio Reguilon will miss the game against Ludogorets through illness while Erik Lamela and Serge Aurier are injured.
