Jose Mourinho makes title prediction as he labels Liverpool "lucky"

Jose Mourinho says he predicted Liverpool would win the Premier League four months ago - but says they were "lucky" to beat Tottenham.

The Spurs manager waxed lyrical about the Reds prior to taking the manager's job in north London while providing analysis on Sky Sports.

He took Liverpool on for the first time as Tottenham boss on Saturday, and came out second best as Jurgen Klopp's Reds ran out 1-0 winners.

After the match Mourinho was asked whether he thinks Liverpool will win the title this season.

He responded: "I told you they would win the league when they beat Manchester City three or four months ago. They were lucky – they could have conceded a goal and got a red card for [Andy] Robertson's challenge."

Mourinho was disappointed with the manner in which his side conceded against Liverpool.

He added: "Yesterday we spent half an hour defending throw-ins and we lost the game on the throw-in.

"I think the refs did a very good job, but the assistant on the opposite side didn't see that Mane touched the ball [in the build-up to the goal].

"We have to try to create a buzz to compete with a team as good as they are.

"I think we deserved more. We intensified the pressure more in the second half. We were more aggressive.

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld also bemoaned the result.

He said: "As a defensive side we did wonderfully well. Unfortunately we couldn't get ourselves a point. We're disappointed with the result but not with the performance.

"We have to take the positives from this game. We had a clear week to train with no mid-week game. I think you could see the organisation was a lot better.

"We have to keep going, build from this performance and keep working hard."
