Jose Mourinho makes surprise Liverpool admission as ex-Manchester United boss hails Jurgen Klopp's players ahead of Barcelona clash

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has praised Liverpool ahead of the Champions League first leg semi-final tie against Barcelona.

Mourinho has never enjoyed a good relationship with the Reds supporters during his time managing Chelsea and Man United, but he seems to be enjoying watching Jurgen Klopp's side this season.

The 56-year-old is even backing Liverpool to get past Barcelona over the two legs and then defeat Spurs or Ajax in the final next month.

He told RT: “Liverpool’s strength, [Virgil] van Dijk is phenomenal, and then every game, OK, not every game, but here, here, here, not here, here, here, here, Firmino, Salah, Mane, they score and they score and they score.

“Tell me a game where Salah, Firmino, Mane all three together they didn’t score? It’s very rare."

The alarming European trend Liverpool are desperate to stop against Barcelona in Champions League semi-final

It seems that Mourinho believes both sides have a completely equal chance of winning the tie.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson like Brazil icons and Liverpool should show no Barcelona fear

“The reality is that Liverpool last season, they played the final, and this season they are in the semi-finals with, in my opinion, 50 per cent chances of being in the final,” he added.

“I think if Barcelona plays in Liverpool, the second leg, in the same way they played the first leg at Old Trafford, they will be in trouble.

“So, I think in the first match Barcelona will go obviously to try to be in front, but as we were saying before, Mane, Salah, Firmino - not so direct, but the way he links the play.

"They are very dangerous, they can also hurt Barcelona."
