Jose Mourinho makes Scott McTominay position claim ahead of England vs Scotland Euro 2020 clash

England and Scotland are gearing up for one of the most anticipated games of Euro 2020 tonight with the Tartan Army desperately needing a win.

Manchester United ’s Scott McTominay is expected to play a major role for Scotland in the game.

The Lancaster-born Scottish international has made 24 caps for his country so far in various positions including in a more unconventional role as a centre-back in a back three.

McTominay’s former manager, Jose Mourinho has revealed he believes Steve Clarke should utilise the Manchester United midfielder’s pace in a centre-back position for the clash against England this evening.

Speaking to TalkSport the Portuguese said: “Steve deserves all the respect and the last thing I want to do here is be the smart one, it’s just my opinion like anybody else who listens to this show.

“The fact McTominay can play in defence, he’s faster than Grant Hanley and I think Scotland need speed against [Raheem[ Sterling and [Marcus] Rashford – they’re going to attack the space in the behind.

“Do you lose a very strong midfield player? Yes, but [Stuart] Armstrong and [John] McGinn are good players who are intense and recover balls and the kid, Gilmour, he will give them a focal point because he wants the ball all the time.”

The prospect of McTominay facing up against his club teammate in Marcus Rashford should make the tie an interesting watch for Manchester United supporters.

McTominay is yet to start a game as a defender under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
