Jose Mourinho makes referees' vow as he savages Tottenham's lack of mental strength

Jose Mourinho hit out at VAR after Tottenham were controversially disallowed a goal, claiming the referee should be in charge.

VAR official Michael Oliver ruled out Harry Kane’s equaliser because Lucas Moura accidentally handled in the build-up when he was fouled.

Angry Spurs boss Mourinho said: “Normally I am an emotional guy on the bench.

“But now I never complain with the guy with the whistle because he’s not the referee anymore.

“I used to disagree with decisions, I used to complain, I used to go to the fourth official, but the man on the pitch is the assistant referee.

“The man and the lady with the flags used to be the assistant referees, now they are the assistant assistant referees.

“The referee is in the office. I think the referee should always be the man on the pitch and the people in the office should just support, just assist.

“It is the man in the office and that referee is not very good on the pitch so you can’t expect he is very good in the office.

“We are going in a direction which is really bad for the game, the beautiful game, we all fell in love with.”

Spurs collapsed after the disallowed goal as United recorded their first win since the return and Mourinho claims his side must show more character.

“We have to do better,” he said. “We have to be mentally stronger to cope with what happened during the game.

“We cannot mentally die after Michael Oliver gives a decision.”

Blades boss Chris Wilder sympathised with Mourinho because his side have also suffered because of VAR.

“I totally understand the frustration of the manager and the players,” he said. “We’ve had the rub of the green on that one. It’s long overdue and we’ll take it.”
