'He is not a striker.'
That is what Jose Mourinho had to say when asked to discuss Steven Bergwijn's arrival at Tottenham.
The Dutch international became Mourinho's second signing of the January transfer window when he arrived on Wednesday from PSV Eindhoven in a reported £27million deal.
Bergwijn joins Gedson Fernandes in N17 and will go straight into the Spurs squad for the game against Manchester City on Sunday.
The 23-year-old has usually been utilised as a winger in the Eredivisie, playing on the left-hand side and also the right. But he can play through the middle too.
Spurs are in desperate need of a striker during the final hours of the January transfer window, with talisman Harry Kane out of action until April at the earliest.
Willian Jose from Real Sociedad and Olivier Giroud from Chelsea have been linked and Mourinho is keen to have another frontman in.
Speaking to Sky Sports News ahead of his press conference for the Manchester City game, Mourinho delivered a pointed verdict on Bergwijn.
"We've got a kid with amazing potential, that's going to be cared for and loved and that I think is going to be a fantastic player for us and a player the fans will learn how to love, because he's the profile of a player that our fans will love.
"He is an attacking option, of course he's not a striker, he's a player that likes to play from the sides, at PSV more from the left, for the national team more from the right.
"He's not a player to resolve the problems of today, because our future is not today or tomorrow, it's long-term. A profile of player, very, very young, very adapted to the way we want to play football and we're very happy to have him."
