Jose Mourinho has opened up on his struggles at Manchester United, claiming that he believes his achievements at Old Trafford were undervalued due to high expectations.
Mourinho sensationally joined United in the summer of 2016 following Louis van Gaal's sacking, and was seen as the man to deliver sustained success back to the club.
The former Chelsea coach won two trophies in his first season in Manchester, lifting the EFL Cup and Europa League - the latter ensuring his record of winning every major European cup final he has coached in stayed in tact.
Mourinho went trophyless in the following campaign, but led United to a second-placed finish behind Manchester City - an achievement which the Portuguese coach stands by as his biggest success at Old Trafford.
United started the 2018-19 season in disastrous fashion, with seven wins from their opening 17 games costing Mourinho his job in December.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was handed the job on a temporary basis before securing the role full-time in March, but Mourinho has offered the Norwegian a taste of things to come by suggesting that United and their fans have unrealistic expectations of where the club should be.
"I can just say that the Manchester United time was not an easy time," he told Sky Sports. "I always felt that to win the Europa League was fantastic and it didn't look like it was, the way people approach it.
"To finish second was even more than that [success], so probably I was feeling a little bit like: 'Wow, I'm working well, I'm giving everything and I'm not getting what I think that deserves'.
"The only thing I can promise you is that when I have the next club, the next project, I will be so, so happy that I will walk into that press conference with a big smile. That I can promise."
