Jose Mourinho leaves three Tottenham stars out of Europa League squad but one gets back in

Jose Mourinho has left Paulo Gazzaniga and Gedson Fernandes out of his Tottenham Hotspur squad for the Europa League group stages.

Tottenham had two too many 'non-locally trained' first team players for their squad and Mourinho had to make the tough decision to leave out the Argentine and Portuguese.

Spurs' issues are complicated by the fact that Eric Dier, despite being an England international and born in England, is not seen by UEFA or the Premier League as homegrown because of his academy years in Portugal.

Ben Davies and Matt Doherty are seen as homegrown by the Premier League but not by UEFA because the former spent his academy years in Wales - then not affiliated with the English FA - while the Irishman just missed out on the required amount of time, by months, required to train in England before his 21st birthday.

The arrival of Sergio Reguilon and Carlos Vinicius required Mourinho to free up two more spaces and that means Gazzaniga and Gedson are the only two players to miss out from the current first team squad.

Tottenham's Premier League squad has space for both one more foreign signing should one arrive in January.

Gazzaniga was linked with moves away from the club during the transfer window, while the on-loan Gedson has struggled to pin down a regular spot in Mourinho's matchday squads.

Homegrown Alfie Whiteman takes Gazzaniga's spot in the European squad.

Danny Rose, who has not been training with the first team, has also not been named in Mourinho's Europa League squad either as the club look to move him on with just eight months left of his contract.

Juan Foyth was not named in the Europa League squad ahead of his loan move to Villarreal, but Ryan Sessegnon has been removed from the squad, having been registered the play-off match against Maccabi Haifa as he has since moved to Hoffenheim on loan.

His removal as an "association trained" player means that Jack Clarke can now be registered for the squad.

He does not make the B list, which means you can be registered 24 hours before games, like Japhet Tanganga can, because he has not been at the club for two years yet.

Clarke could yet be loaned out in the domestic window, with Birmingham interested, but this move allows him to get minutes in the Europa League if needed.
