Jose Mourinho issues update on Tottenham's summer transfer plans amid Champions League doubts

Jose Mourinho has claimed that Tottenham will improve their squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Having spent big 12 months ago to bring Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke to the club, things will be a lot different this year.

With a lot of sides set to have limited money in the transfer market due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fact Spurs are in real danger of missing out on a Champions League place could also reduce their budget even more.

Currently nine points off Chelsea in fourth with seven games to go, what may help the Lilywhites out is that fifth position would be enough to take a spot in Europe's top competition providing that Man City's two-year European ban remains in place.

Mourinho plays down suggestions of rift with Ndombele

With Daniel Levy previously stating that missing out on the Champions League would have an impact on transfer funds, Mourinho believes that Spurs don't need such a huge investment to improve things.

"That's normal. A team that qualifies or doesn't qualify for the Champions League, it makes a difference to their economical situation. That's easy to understand and easy to accept," Mourinho told football.london.

"The two good things are that Mr Levy wants what I want. He wants what the fans want, which is to win football matches and to try to win trophies. So that's one good thing.

"The second good thing is that we don't need much. We don't need many players. We don't need huge investment.

"That's not our profile as a club. With or without Covid, with or without Champions League, so I think we will manage.

"It doesn't matter what happens in terms of the table, we will manage to improve our squad which is what we want."
