Jose Mourinho issues update on contract talks with Eriksen, Alderweireld and Vertonghen

The futures of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have been up in the air for some time now.

The former Ajax trio are all out of contract at Tottenham at the end of this season and all three were tipped to move on last summer, although they all remained in N17.

Tottenham only received one bid in the summer transfer window - from Roma for Alderweireld, but it was for less than half of the release clause that was triggered by Spurs taking up an extra year's option on his contract.

There is a growing hope inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that the two Belgian defenders will put pen to paper on a new deal with the club following Jose Mourinho's arrival.

Mourinho became the club's new head coach following Mauricio Pochettino's sacking two weeks ago and the futures of the three contract rebels were put right back on the agenda.

Eriksen is still expected to leave the club, with Spurs waiting to see if anyone comes in for him in the January transfer window.

And Mourinho has revealed that he and chairman Daniel Levy are in talks with the three about their futures.

Jose Mourinho full pre-Manchester United press conference

Speaking ahead of the game with Manchester United on Wednesday, Mourinho said: "I’m not going to discuss these individual things.

"If I tell you that I didn’t speak with Mr Levy about Eriksen, Alderweireld and Vertonghen, I would be lying. So, yes I’m speaking with Mr Levy about it.

"At the same time, I speak also with the players, with all of them. We speak and try to understand every detail but it’s not something I’m going to discuss.

"The important thing, really, is [they are] great professionals, they have a big relationship with Tottenham, amazing understanding of what the club is and what we need from them.

"So, all three are ready to play, all three are ready to forget the contractual situation. And that’s the most important thing now because we’re in three competitions. And these boys are great players and Tottenham people. I trust them."
