Jose Mourinho issues statement on Premier League return insisting he does not want delay

Jose Mourinho insists he wants to return to action quickly.

Tottenham boss Mourinho has issued a public statement to clarify he is anxious to resume Premier League games after the League Managers’ Association meeting.

Mirror Sport reported that Mourinho was one of several managers to speak up at the LMA meeting to express concerns about player welfare.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also known to have urged Premier League bosses not to rush into a return and the season may not return until June 19, a week later than originally planned.

Mourinho said: “I don’t think my position in the meeting has been reflected fairly at all today in media reports. I have not asked for any delay.

“I want to train, and I am desperate for the Premier League to return as soon as it is safe to do so, particularly now we are seeing other leagues preparing to return to action.

“I am extremely proud of the way my players have maintained their fitness – they have shown great professionalism, passion and dedication.

“We have all been working extremely hard through remote squad training sessions and isolated running now the pitches are available to use again at the training centre.

“Every player has been extremely committed in terms of their individual work and now we wait for clearance to commence working in small groups again, which I will fully support.”

Mirror Sport also revealed that Mourinho made it clear he is desperate to return with a cutting remark to his fellow managers.

Mourinho joined with the likes of Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti in saying he is keen for the Premier League to resume.

It has emerged from the League Managers’ Association meeting that Mourinho wants to come back while other bosses are reluctant and want to wait.

Mourinho told his fellow managers: “If you don’t want to play, stay home and watch Bundlesliga!”
