Jose Mourinho has given his Tammy Abraham verdict as Roma eye transfer - but there is a catch

There are now just over three weeks until the end of the summer transfer window and a number of players could still join and depart Chelsea before August 31.

The Blues are close to making their second signing as Romelu Lukaku is set to arrive in a £98 million move from Inter Milan, after Marcus Bettinelli arrived through the door last month.

It is not just incomings that have been on the agenda at Stamford Bridge though, with nine players leaving the club and they could be in line to lose another.

Cortello dello Sport reported that AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly 'asked' to bring Tammy Abraham to the Italian capital ahead of their Serie A opener.

However, Roma consider his £40 million price 'excessive' and will try to lower the price by asking for a loan deal with an option to buy.

Abraham has been linked with a switch away from the Blues this summer, with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Atalanta among those who have previously eyed a move for the striker.

Despite scoring 12 goals in 32 appearances last term, the 23-year-old struggled for regular minutes after Thomas Tuchel was appointed in January and has looked set for an exit this summer.

Although he has featured in all three of Chelsea's pre-season matches so far, it is still likely that Abraham could leave this month, especially when Lukaku completes his move.

Roma are the latest club to show interest in the England frontman and Edin Dzeko's potential departure would leave them short in the attacking department.

The Bosnian could be on his way to Inter as Lukaku's replacement and Roma would have just Borja Mayoral as their only recognised number nine for their league curtain-raiser with Fiorentina on August 22.

Abraham's ability to lead the line on his own would suit Mourinho's traditional 4-3-3 style, which he opted at Tottenham Hotspur and this could be an option for the striker to further develop his game.
