Jose Mourinho has already told Mikel Arteta how to unleash Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Arsenal

Jose Mourinho has previously spoken in-depth about how he would get the best out of Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Portuguese tactician will be tasking his Tottenham Hotspur defenders with keeping the 31-year-old quiet in this weekend's huge North London Derby.

That is despite Aubameyang's form dipping since signing his new Arsenal contract back in September.

The striker has failed to score from open play in the Premier League since the opening weekend of the season - a 3-0 win over Fulham.

Mikel Arteta on Alexandre Lacazette's role

Aubameyang has just two league goals to his name and that means Arsenal's entire output in attack has suffered tremendously, which has coincided with their worst start to a top-flight season in terms of goals and points after 10 games.

Interestingly, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has changed the Gabon international's position from left-wing to the central striker in the last two league games - but to no avail with Aubameyang drawing a blank against Leeds United as well as Wolves.

But Mourinho has already explained that he feels that Aubameyang is better suited to operating from a wider position.

Speaking as a Sky Sports pundit after Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Tottenham in September 2019, Mourinho explained how the Gunners could replicate Jurgen Klopp's formula at Liverpool to get the best out of Aubameyang.

"I think Aubameyang probably he likes to play in the middle because he feels if he’s in the middle he can score more goals," Mourinho said. "But maybe he can score as many goals playing on the left.

"What happens at Liverpool is [Roberto] Firmino drops back, drops in between the lines, and then he gives more space for [Mohamed] Salah and [Sadio] Mane to attack these diagonals.

"I would see Aubameyang playing on that left side of Liverpool and scoring a lot of goals.

"At Arsenal, Lacazette doesn’t have that quality, but they have two options. One is to play, instead of like today with three midfield players almost in a straight line, to play how they played in the last 10 or 20 minutes with two [sitting midfielders] and one No.10 that can feed the three without bringing Lacazette in between the lines."

Some 15 months on from Mourinho's analysis and Arteta finds himself in a position where he's still searching for the right formula to finally unleash Aubameyang this season.

Whilst playing as a left-winger, Aubameyang was the catalyst for Arsenal's FA Cup triumph last season as he scored a brace in both the semi-final and final against Man City and Chelsea respectively.

As a result, Arteta has a big decision to make to get his captain firing again - starting with the North London Derby against Mourinho's table-topping Spurs side.
