Jose Mourinho gives verdict on Harry Maguire ahead of Manchester United debut vs Chelsea

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has delivered a promising verdict on new signing Harry Maguire, who he expects to have a huge impact at the club.

A lengthy transfer saga during the summer eventually saw United land their man, paying a world record fee for a defender to bring the England international to Old Trafford from Leicester City.

The £80million Maguire was straight into the United side for the opening weekend clash against Chelsea, making his club debut, and Mourinho was also enjoying a debut as a pundit on Sky Sports' Super Sunday.

The Portuguese shared his thoughts on the capture of Maguire, which he explained could provide a huge boost to the squad.

He said: “He is an English player, knows the Premier League, had a good pre-season and he was just waiting for the moment to join Manchester United. It’s difficult to get better than him.

“I can imagine that now a part of the defensive points are very important and I also see a player who is very comfortable with the ball. Lindelof on one side, Maguire on the other.

“I think this is much better for them, much more quality, and even with the goal kicks and the changing of the rules, if they want to do it, they have the quality to do that.”
