Jose Mourinho gives Gareth Bale injury update as he speaks out on 'totally wrong' Instagram post

Jose Mourinho has opened up on Gareth Bale's Instagram post and confirmed the player will be selected for Tottenham's game at Man City providing he is fit.

Returning to the club in September on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid, the Welshman has played a bit-part role so far due to injury and fitness issues.

Expected to be involved on Wednesday night in the FA Cup tie away at Everton, Bale was a surprise omission from the squad.

Mourinho revealed after the tie on Merseyside that the 31-year-old had asked for a scan on a muscle issue on Monday and trained with the team the following day, before later requesting to work with the club's sport science people for a couple of days.

However, the player then uploaded an image to his Instagram account before the match of him training with the caption "Good session today".

That in turn lead to many people believing that the player was indeed fit to play and instead pointing the finger at Mourinho for not including him.

Asked at his pre-match press conference about the Instagram post, the head coach said: "I have to admit that his post created a need of being addressed. There was a contradiction between the post and the reality.

"Since the beginning of the season, in relation to everything, I've tried to be very private and keep everything indoors but I felt that I needed to address the situation.

"Probably the post was not even his responsibility, but it was showing that training session was great and I'm ready which was totally wrong. So when questioned I had to give the reality of things.

"I repeat for the last time. He was not feeling good. He asked for a scan. He had a scan. The scan did not show an injury but his feelings were still there but as coaches, medical people we can never go against the player feelings. So he was not ready for the game. It's as simple as that.

"If he's ready for tomorrow he's selected for tomorrow."

Asked about injuries ahead of the Man City match, Mourinho confirmed that his side picked up no new injuries following the Everton defeat.

However, he did confirm that Giovani Lo Celso is "not even close" to returning after last featuring for the side against Leicester City prior to Christmas.

When pressed on Bale, he said: "We have a training session, we'll see how he feels."
