Jose Mourinho 'facing Tottenham sack' if he fails to qualify for the Champions League

Jose Mourinho is set to lose his job if he fails to guide Tottenham into the Champions League places.

The Portuguese manager saw his side crash out of the Europa League on Thursday night.

Dinamo Zagreb upset the odds leaving Tottenham needing a top four finish to qualify for Europe's top table.

Mourinho has been in charge for just under 18 months, but is already under mounting pressure.

A collapse since Christmas has seen Tottenham go from title hopefuls to top four outsiders.

The club have had to endure the financial ramifications of no Champions League football this term coupled with the affects of the global pandemic.

Failure to make Europe's elite competition for a second season and missing out on its riches could therefore prove too much for chairman Daniel Levy, reports the Daily Mail.

There are also emerging concerns that there is a split in the dressing room.

Mourinho's previous jobs at Chelsea and Manchester United have ended in ugly fashion and there are fears of a repeat in north London.

A negative brand of football has come in for criticism and in the wake of their Europa League defeat skipper Hugo Lloris seemed to question their approach.

Sacking the 58-year-old though would be an expensive decision however given the compensation pay out he would be due.

As a result Tottenham would look to put the Special One on gardening leave, given he earns a reported £13m-a-year.

A search to identify potential replacements has already begun with RB Leipzig's Julian Nagelsmann highly thought of.

The German would be attainable for less than half of Mourinho's hefty salary.

Leicester's Brendan Rodgers is also seen as a strong candidate given his work at the King Power, but securing his services would be a difficult task.
